A view of the plantation drive. GUWAHATI, Jan 3 - As a mark of support to Indian Oil’s commitment towards the cause of environment protection and conservation, Guwahati Refinery carried out an ‘Akira Miyawaki’ method of afforestation at Amingaon in the city on January 1.
A total of 4,000 saplings of around 48 species of indigenous plants were planted near the Saraighat Lake in an attempt to build ‘the lungs of Guwahati city’.
A large number of employees took part in the afforestation drive which was carried out in line with the ‘Think Green’ mission of Indian Oil. The afforestation was carried out under the CSR initiatives of Guwahati Refinery and in collaboration with the district administration of Kamrup.
Kamal Kumar Baishya, DC Kamrup and S Manchanda,Executive Director (GR), inaugurated the plantation drive at the location.
While appreciating the efforts of the refinery towards increasing the green cover of the city through the plantation drive, Baishya expressed his desire to collaborate with the refinery for similar future endeavours. He also urged the officials and the public to put in their efforts for maintenance of the plantation site and contributing towards a clean and green environment.
Manchanda lauded the collaborative efforts of the employees and the officials of the Kamrup district administration for their active participation and constant support throughout.
Dr S Dutta, Addl. Director of Central Pollution Control Board, North Eastern Region (NER), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and a technical expert of the Akira Miyawaki Model of afforestation, delivered a talk explaining the Miyawaki method of plantation and its relevance with the growing cityscape of Guwahati city.
He also stressed the importance of planting trees and praised the refinery’s initiatives for the noble cause.
