INFRASTRUCTURE AND TELE COMMUNICATIONS
Although being a medium sized city, ranking around 50th (in terms of population) in India, the city's quality of life is comparatively higher. A recent survey (2006) by a popular Indian magazine – Outlook (Money) ranked Guwahati 17th among all the major and medium sized Indian cities. The city provides competitive residential and working environments with beautiful landscapes, pleasant climate, modern shopping areas, modern apartments and bungalows, and considerably good social infrastructure. Centrally funded four-lane, ambitious East-West Corridor is going through Guwahati City which is connecting all the North-Eastern Capitals. On completion of the project, it is going to boost the vital upliftment of the whole North-Eastern region. TATA Group of industries has ventured upon the region by setting up a massive Five Star hotel in the heart of the city, also opening up a TCS office, it going to be an added life line to the city's long needed infrastructure.
Still the city needs attention to improve its infrastructure. Asian Development Bank gives assistance to improve city's transportation infrastructure. Also the city receives substantial amount from JNNURM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission) for its development.
Under the Government initiatives AMTRON going to open up a multifunctional IT park with the state-of-the-art equipments in Guwahati. The location of the software park is near Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Interational Airport, Borjar. This park has been done by the Software Technology Park of India ltd a Government of India Organization and the infrastructure is similar to the technology park in Noida, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Bhubaneswar.
The present telecommunication network in the state is growing fast in comparison to the other parts of the country. Currently, individuals and industry alike face no problems in procuring telephone and other telecommunications facilities.
Assam has 269 telephone exchanges with approximately 1, 20,000 working connections. The growth rate approximately matches the demand and the shortfall if any, is marginal. Mobile telephone services are available throughout the state.
Recently all most of the telecommunications companies have set up their network in Guwahati with entire Assam like BSNL, AIRTEL, Vodafone, TATA INDICOM, AIR Cell and providing good services in their sectors
To boost the economy Assam Industrial Development Corporation has established an Export Promotion Industrial Park with estmated cost 14.62 project in Amingoan near Guwahati. This will provide infrastrural facilities of high standard for export orientd units.
